“The Earth is the Primary Revelation” Thomas Berry
Today I heard God speak to me
in the voice of a Black-headed Grosbeak.
Its familiar warble rose above the cacophony
of bird song and brought me to tears.
Tears of joy at a Pentecost ongoing,
the Divine continually speaking to us
in languages we earthlings can understand
in innumerable ways through creation.
Tears of sorrow at the magnitude of loss
the extinction of so many expressions of God.
For us humans, the Earth is and has always been
the primary revelation.

I love this! Thank you so much. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a comment Robert Bly made in his old age (because I am now well into my old age). He said, as I recall, “I’ve learned as I age how to use grief productively.” Perhaps he was referring to his work as a poet. I don’t know, but since I spend a lot of time in grief, as much for the Earth as for humanity, I’d like to go beyond tears somehow .. to do some action inspired by that grieving. Thomas Berry’s poem moves in that direction,bO think.
Thank you for sharing your joy and your sorrow with us, Sharon. Lovely poem.
